Year 2015

  • September - Focus Group on Preventing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in universities to develop "Policy Guidelines on Equity and Equality"
  • October - Establishment of the UGC Standing Committee on Gender Equity & Equality
  • November - MOU on the delivery of the Project 'Building Gender Mainstreaming Capacity of University Faculty and Staff in Sri Lanka' signed by Secretary General of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the Chairman/UGC
  • December - Recommendation of the Standing Committee to the Commission to establish the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality

Year 2016

  • April - Consultative Dialogue and Workshop on Preventing Ragging and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Universities for stake holders under the patronage of Ministry of Policy Planning and Economic Affair and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the honorable Ranil Wickramasinghe took place under the above MOU
  • May
     
    • Concept note on Curbing Violence and Harassment in Universities with Key performance Indicators
    • Submission of Preliminary Guidelines for Action - Preventing Ragging and SGBV (including Sexual Harassment)
  • June - Workshop on 'ICT Based National Complaints and Redress Mechanism for Ragging and SGBV'
  • August
     
    • Decision to train two IT personnel from UGC to India to obtain the relevant training on on-line complaints and redress mechanism
    • Issue of a circular pertaining to E-Module on Sexual and Reproductive Health to the Pre-Academic/ Orientation Course for University Students
  • September- Establishment of a Centre for Gender Equity and Equality and Prevention of Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Ragging

Year 2017

  • January - Launch of the Ragging Complaints Portal along with the UGC Call Centre on 0112 123700
  • November - Establishment of ‘Taskforce to Prevent and Eliminate Ragging in Universities’.
  • Start to send Anti-Ragging Affidavit for students/parents at the university registration
Year 2018
  • January
     
    • Establishment of University Gender Centres /Units at 15 universities.
    • A new module had introduced to Ragging Complaint Portal which can be maintain complaints directly received to the respective universities
  • April - December - “A research study on Ragging and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the Sri Lankan University System" and proposing interventions and mechanisms for combating Ragging and SGBV in the System.

Year 2019
  • December - Issue Commission Circular based on the “A research study on Ragging and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the Sri Lankan University System" (Comm. Circular No. 12/2019)

Year 2020
  • April - Completion of the report on the study "Research study on Ragging and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the Sri Lankan University System" and proposing interventions and mechanisms for combatting Ragging and SGBV in the System.
  • July - Based on the findings of the study on Ragging and SGBV in the Sri Lankan university system an initiation was taken to develop a course titled "Learning to Live with Diversity" as an intervention to combatting Ragging and SGBV in the Universities and HEIs that are operating under the purview of the UGC.
    This course will be offered in 2022 to all the university communities including students,academic staff,administrative staff and non-academic staff.
